“Wake Me Up When September Ends”

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father’s come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father’s come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

Writer(s): Billie Joe Armstrong, Frank Wright, Michael Pritchard
This song was written by Billie Joe Armstrong about his father, who died of cancer on the 1st of September 1982. When his mother got home after the funeral and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, he simply said, “Wake me up when September ends.”
“Seven years” which “has gone so fast” are the time passed after Billie Joe Armstrong’s father died and before Billie formed a band Sweet Children with Mike Dirnt. That band would later become Green Day.
Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood played in the music video for this song. The video isn’t about Billie Joe Armstrong’s father but depicts a couple broken apart by the Iraq War. It was far from the song’s literal meaning, but Armstrong found it appropriate considering the song’s theme of loss.
